After a 9% decline in the U.S. fertility rate during the economic downturn (2007-2011), the 2012 rate seems to have stabilized. Hans-Peter Kohler says this in itself is exciting news and he predicts “we’ll see further stabilization and possibly growth in 2013.” A moderately growing population is viewed as heralding economic improvement as it is connected to employment rates.
