“It would be very nice if there was one set of guidelines that fit every population, but not all groups are the same,” says Sarah Tishkoff, a human geneticist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, who in the 1990s pioneered efforts to work with African populations in genomics. “It’s very hard to come up with a ‘one size fits all’.”
