"Crossing the Global Quality Chasm: Improving Health Care Worldwide" - NASEM. 08/15/2018
This new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine finds that poor-quality health care in low- and middle-income countries leads to 10-15% of all deaths each year in these countries, and a concomitant loss of productivity equal to about $1.5 trillion annually. The report makes a series of recommendations based on a vision of quality improvement via “care that is anticipatory and predictive, not merely reactive; care reflective of societal values; and care that bases decisions on clear evidence, continuous feedback, and learning.” The report also outlines a vision for health care that is safe, effective and efficient, person-centered, and accessible/affordable to all. Harvard’s Ashish Jha is a member of the NASEM Committee on Improving the Quality of Health Care Globally, which issued the report.
