In a study using nationally representative data (NHANES and NHATS), Stephanie Chen, Jay Bhattacharya, and Suzann Pershing found that visual impairment was associated with cognitive dysfunction among Americans 60 years of age and older. Their analysis accounted for demographics, health, and other functional impairments. The investigators say: “Further research is warranted to better understand… the relationships between visual and cognitive decline. However, from a policy perspective, should causality be established, this may contribute to the value of vision screening.”
