In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the NIA Centers on the Demography and Economics of Aging, a special issue of the *Journal of Population Ageing* has published five papers based on presentations at the 2014 RAND Summer Institute on Aging. John Haaga and Richard Suzman, of NIA’s Division of Behavioral and Social Research, introduce these papers here.
